Are their tools to make it easier to log in as / pose as multiple people on multiple IMs simultaneously?

I had met some friends online and we would have occasional group chats. There would be like 6 to 8 of us talking all at once in the chat. Some time later, I found out that one of them wasn't real, and that one of the people in the chat was posing as two people at once. Not a big surprise. That's easy to do. I figured that the other people were just in on the hoax with this person. But now I have reason to suspect that all 8 people were the same person. Are there apps out there that make this easier to do, or is this person just really good at multitasking?
