Why a bigger deal now?

My generation had The Village People, Queen and Elton John and made no big deal about it. Do you think ity has become more controversial now than then? My view is that Fundamentalist Christians are fighting it every inch of the way and the stronger they get, the slower the Gay Movement can move on. Can you tell me any other reason that it seemed to be more accepted 20/30 years ago.......
